While long-standing tribal and ethnic conflicts contribute to much of the Congolese violence, an additional proximate cause is that crucial minerals such as tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold that are necessary in the manufacture of cell phones, laptop computers, and other electronic devices are found in eastern Congo. Armed militias on all sides of the conflicts have used rape as a deliberate strategy to intimidate and control local populations in their drive to control access to the resources.
