Politics, Policy, and Public Health

All medical fields are impacted by government policies, but none moreso than public health, the goals of which are almost impossible to achieve without some level of government involvement. That involvement can either help or hinder the development and implementation of public health initiatives, and inevitably politics is part of that equation. The just-published fall issue of Findings magazine examines the intersection of politics and public health, featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the passage of the Affordable Care Act written by Jonathan Cohn, one of the senior editors for The New Republic.
The work of two Ann Arbor illustrators is featured in the issue. Cathy Gendron created a richly-textured, humorous take on the Cohn article (left above), and Michael McGowan created 17 compelling spot icons (one of which is at right) for an article on the major hot-button issues facing public health today.
